The Yes We Must Coalition is offering a workshop to college/university teams for Building S.W.E.A.T. Equity: Cross-Campus Collaboration for Low-Income Student-Athlete Retention, a one-session workshop on Thursday, May 23 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm EDT. The workshop will be led by Dr. Jacoba Durrell, Professional Learning and Career Services Director, at Yes We Must member Point University (GA). Student-athletes who come to college as first-generation students and from backgrounds in poverty are often oriented to their college experience by their participation in their sport and need additional support to feel connected to college and the importance of earning a higher degree beyond their sports motivation and experience.

Dr. Durrell will share her innovative approach to career development, S.W.E.A.T. — which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Experiences, Accomplishments and Targets — the fundamental pillars upon which her career theory and model are built. Through a comprehensive assessment process, S.W.E.A.T. provides a holistic understanding of a student-athlete’s career outlook and assists in devising a personalized career plan. Whether identifying skill gaps, or aligning skillsets with prospective careers, or leveraging achievements to propel future success, S.W.E.A.T. empowers individuals to make informed decisions and take confident strides toward their desired careers.

This workshop is intended for cross-campus teams of at least 2 people — career services staff, athletic staff, academic support and advising staff, residence life staff, and all others who regularly interact with student-athletes and desire to support them in reaching academic goals as well as athletic goals. Dr. Durrell will introduce teams to the principles behind the model and provide practical insights and strategies to integrate career development into student-athletes’ college experience.

What Is Involved?

The workshop will consist of one 2-hour virtual gathering in Zoom on Thursday, May 23, 2024, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm EDT. Campus teams will complete a pre-workshop exercise.

Who Should Attend?

Teams from all Yes We Must Coalition member schools and other colleges/universities who share our commitment to increasing the success of students from low-income backgrounds are invited. Campus teams will participate together in the workshop session to explore an action-oriented plan for their campus.

Teams must consist of at least 2 members. Suggested team members include career services staff, athletic staff, academic support and advising staff, residence life staff, admissions staff and all others who regularly interact with student-athletes and desire to support them in reaching academic goals as well as athletic goals.

Campus Team Outcomes:

  • Understand the S.W.E.A.T. model for connecting student-athletes to the value of their entire college experience, degree completion, and career goals.
  • Explore developing a wide-campus plan for retaining student-athletes that builds on shared responsibility for student-athletes’ connection to college and their broader goals.
  • Meet colleagues at Yes We Must Coalition member schools and others who share common contexts and missions for advancing success of all students and stimulate collaborative work on alternative strategies.
  • Leave with an invitation to participate in a post-meeting virtual Community of Practice to assist one another with plan implementation.
